Focus on our suppliers: Powters Butchers
Powters Butchers a family-run butcher in Newmarket, Suffolk, 16 miles from Hinxton Hall. They supply the Conference Centre with meat for our fine dining menu, as well as burgers and their famous sausages.

Established in 1881
Powters began in 1881 as a family-run butcher in Newmarket, Suffolk, by William Harper, the great grandfather of the current owner (Grant Powter). Having trained as a butcher, he developed the recipe for their famous award-winning Newmarket sausage, which is now listed in most major UK supermarkets throughout the East of England and even enjoyed by royalty when they visit the horse racing.
In the 1970s, Grant Powter returned from Agricultural University and became involved in the farming and pig production side of his father’s business. Together they set up Powters own pig breeding herd to meet the demand for the sausages. In the 80s, Powters built its own production site just on the outskirts of Newmarket that allowed them to scale up production, and took sausage making away from the small shop premises into a purpose built site.
Today Powter’s has four family members working in the business: Alison and Grant Powter, and their children Tristan and Lydia. The family have their own farm just outside of Newmarket, a butcher’s shop in town – with butchers who pride themselves on their craftsmanship, learnt from the previous generation of butchers – and a thriving online shop offering nationwide delivery.

Exceptional meat
As fifth-generation farmers and artisan butchers, they are committed to supplying excellent quality meat. Their expertise and passion have helped them to build partnerships with a network of trusted independent farmers across the UK who share the same ethos for animal welfare and sustainable practices. Their farmers rear their livestock naturally, specialising in free-range and high welfare standards, resulting in exceptional meat.
Did you know that in 2012 ‘Newmarket’ Sausages became the 50th British food product to be awarded the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from the European Commission? This means they can only be made in Newmarket to a strict set of quality standards. Only three local companies can call their produce “Newmarket” sausages, and Powters ‘Newmarket Pig’ sausage is one of the three permitted products. It has also won multiple Great Taste awards!
